So, we just finished our third and final performance of ORIENTATION at the 2011 Odyssey Performance Art Festival. What a week! It has been exhausting, frustrating, maddening, exciting, exhilarating and completely worth all the effort. Thanks to Odyssey; particularly Fau Ferdinand, Lizsolo Mathilde and Jo Ellsmere, and all the avatars who attended and played along. Thanks also to Dekka Raymaker & Penumbra Carter for providing security.

ArthOle at 2011 Odyssey Performance Art Festival

ArthOle has reformed for the 2011 Odyssey Performance Art Festival, and will host a remixed performance of ORIENTATION (last seen in 2009).

ORIENTATION is a multimedia promenade performance that relies on audience participation. The attendees arrive at the location and will be guided by interactions from the actors.

Due to the nature of the performance, numbers will be limited to ten people per date, on a first-come, first-served basis. Please reserve your place by contacting Arahan Claveau or Nebulosus Severine in-world.

First performance:

Sunday 10th July at 12pm PDT, 3pm EDT, 8pm BST

Second performance:

Thursday 14th July at 12pm PDT, 3pm EDT, 8pm BST

Duration – 25 minutes (approx.)

ArthOle at MMIF 2011

This weekend sees the return of the annual Ma Machinima International Festival (MMIF), and a machinima entitled XXX PRIVATE SHOW I shot for an installation at the ArthOle gallery in 2008 is showing as part of the festival's schedule. MMIF 2011 runs from Friday June 17 through Saturday June 18, and the ArthOle machinima will play on Saturday in block 3, starting at 11.30am (SLT/PDT).

Unfortunately I can't be there, but Nebulosus Severine will be attending in Second Life to talk a bit about the background on the making of the machinima.

MMIF is a mixed-reality event, taking place simultaneously at the LEA Theatre in Second Life and Club Karlsson in Amsterdam.

ArthOle Closure

It is with regret we announce the closure of the ArthOle gallery in Second Life on September 30th 2009.

We are unfortunately unable to dedicate the necessary time to the gallery anymore, and for a number of other reasons feel it is time to move on and go our separate ways. We are enormously proud of what we've achieved over the last sixteen months and are very grateful for all the support from our members and the incredible talents of guest artists; Ichibot Nishi, Selavy Oh, Dekka Raymaker and Penumbra Carter.

Thanks also to Lysander Edo and Khamudy Mannonen for donating land, and Amy Freelunch for all her encouragement and enthusiasm.

We will continue to work in Second Life, keep an eye on our respective blogs for news on future projects and exhibitions -

The University of Kansas SIM is proud to present “The Brooklyn is Watching 30 Best,”a juried selection of the year’s best artworks installed on the Brooklyn is Watching SIM in Second Life (SL). “The 30 Best” is part of the Brooklyn is Watching Year One Festival, and runs from July 7th through August 23rd in both SL at University of Kansas SIM, and in real life at Jack The Pelican Presents in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. .

The festival began in SL with open nominations in June, and in early August a celebrity judge panel will select the top five artworks. Judges include SL greats Amy Wilson, Annabeth Robinson, Stacey Fox, and SL AM Radio and Bettina Tizzy. The festival continues in real life at Jack The Pelican Presents, where the top five will be on display from August 7 to 23rd. Panel discussions, performances and other programming based on the competition will be announced late July.

Nominated artists include: Dancoyote Antonelli, Dekka Raymaker, Gazira Babeli, Glyph Graves, Juria Yoshikawa, Misprint Thursday, Patriciaanne Daviau, Oberon Onmura, Pavig Lok, Rachel Breaker, Rezago Kokorin, two time nominated Arahan Claveau, Comet Morigi, Ichibot Nishi, Nebulosus Severine, Selavy Oh, Solkide Auer, and three time nominated Bryn Oh and Alizarin Goldflake.

Brooklyn is Watching is a project, started by Jay Van Buren, and sponsored by Popcha.com that takes place in Second Life, as well as the real world. In Second Life there is a virtual space where artists from all over display their computer art to be seen by people at Jack the Pelican Presents, a gallery in Williamsburg.

The Year One Festival began as a way to archive and celebrate the best pieces accumulated over the year, but also confirms that Brooklyn really is watching, inspiring and challenging artists to continue making computer arts.

Arthole Season 3 - July 18th 2009

The gallery features new installations from Arahan Claveau and Nebulosus Severine and guest artist Penumbra Carter.

LEVEL 2 - The Unkempt Hair of the Dead by Penumbra Carter

Penumbra’s work has been displayed at several locations in Second Life; most notably with many highly regarded pieces shown at the Brooklyn is Watching project and the Aequitas group exhibition. This intriguingly titled new piece for Arthole Penumbra explains as “my interpretation of riding into the future with the past.”

Penumbra is also a prolific machinima maker whose films can be seen on YouTube. In the real-world she is an artist and painter based in a mysterious Midwestern American town.

LEVEL 1 EAST WING – Empire by Arahan Claveau

The central component of this multimedia experience is a machinima Arahan started filming back in 2006; a series of one minute avatar portraits, inspired in part by Andy Warhol’s so-called “screen tests.” During this long delay Arahan has been considering how best to present the portraits, and he has created a space that incorporates photography and sound montage to compliment the thirty minute film. A homage to Warhol’s groundbreaking Exploding Plastic Inevitable events and the Factory Superstars, and a commentary on the impact of technology and the cult of personality.

LEVEL 1 WEST WING – Autosarcophagy by Nebulosus Severine

Autosarcophagy is a reworked version of an installation previously only seen very briefly at Brooklyn is Watching. This new work continues Nebulosus’s obsessive exploration of Bunnyken, a compelling character that has become inextricably linked with her oeuvre. This new incarnation is a revealing insight into the artist’s alter-ego.

Arthole will soon be saying goodbye to our current guest artist Dekka Raymaker when Penumbra Carter takes over on July 18th, his Church of Whoami has proved to be very popular with visitors and we are proud to have hosted his work.

Dekka has quickly become one of Second Life's most exciting artists, his work has become increasingly more complex and impressive and lately he has been very prolific, producing amazing work at various locations. He is currently exhibiting at Arthole (until 11th July), Aequitas, Soup and now a brand new show at Odyssey the opening of which I visited yesterday.

It's a very ambitious installation, spanning four floors and full of all the detail, social commentary and auto-biographical meaning Dekka has become synonymous with. This is a deeply compelling work and is essential to experience first-hand. Here's some screenshots -

Jay Van Buren is organising a festival to celebrate art that has appeared at Brooklyn is Watching over the first year of the project. It's a pretty exciting and ambitious event, thirty artists will be chosen initially to be part of a Second Life exhibition, and then a final five will get to exhibit in the physical Jack the Pelican Presents gallery in Brooklyn, NYC.

A call to my fellow artists: What do you consider YOUR first work?

On my last Arthole Radio show, I proposed an interesting challenge to my fellow artists.

I got the idea a few months ago, when I received the book No. 1: First Works by 362 Artists, edited by Francesca Richer and Matthew Rosenweig. It features a wide variety of 20th century artists like Matthew Barney, Dale Chihuly, Chuck Close, Gilbert & George, Takashi Murakami, and Robert Longo.

An excerpt from the review page for the book:

The artists were asked to submit what they considered their "first" work of art--not necessarily the first piece they ever created, but the one that first successfully represented who they are as an artist today. Some of the works are first "mature" works, others are seminal or pivotal, others are catalysts, some are new beginnings. These submissions, along with written artists' statements, make up this fascinating look at the process of art-marking.

Arahan Claveau has asked a number of Second Life artists to select a favourite piece of music, the artists themselves will introduce each track and talk about what inspired their choices. Amy Freelunch's show will feature a conversation with Jeff Edwards discussing his graduate thesis for the Masters in Art Criticism & Writing program at the School of Visual Arts. There will also be a short lecture given on German artist Gerhard Richter's Baader-Meinhof series of paintings, delivered by a robot.

Andrew Eglinton, founder and editor of the London Theatre Blog had an interview with Joyce Menjou and Ze Moo about Live Machinima Theatre, as part of the real-world Club Goodbye Dollar event at De Balie Cinema / Theatre (Amsterdam) & cyberspace in August 2008. They chatted about the future of crossing boundaries between arts and technology.

Two interactive cross-reality live shows are discussed in this article: The 'rez-up-comedy' by Lauren Weyland and the performance-art 'Orientation' by the contemporary-arts collective Arthole.

Ze Moo: The ‘Bunnyken’ were created specifically for performance in SL by Arthole in a piece called Orientation. Arthole is a US/Brit art collective who uses SL as their main medium.

AE: Was this also part of Goodbye Dollar?

Ze Moo: Yes Arthole performed at the Goodbye Dollar event. They were one of the top art collectives in 2008 to use SL as a medium of expression.

AE: Could you describe their performance in more detail?

Ze Moo: It began in the SL reception area that Arthole had created. The audience was instructed to gather in this space before being told to swap their regular avatars for ‘Bunnyken’ creatures.

The Arthole members ushered the audience, now dressed in Bunnyken avatars, around the performance space. Don’t forget that this was being observed on the big white De Balie cinema screen in Amsterdam. And since some people in the auditorium had laptops, they were able to participate as Bunnyken.

AE: So an audience watching an audience?

Ze Moo: Yes. In the SL performance, the audience were made to sit in rows in an amphitheatre. They had to listen to strange alien-like speeches; the whole thing had an Orwellian feel to it. There was an atmosphere of intimidation, of control and the speeches were a form of ‘white noise’. Amazingly, most of the SL audience went along with this and did what they were told to do. In the end they arrived in a type of factory where they were made into a sort of pink mud food.

AE: Right…I see. What was the ultimate direction of the piece? Were Arthole working towards a particular outcome?

Ze Moo: A machinima was produced from it a week later (the event was projected on a live Web video stream as I mentioned earlier). Seeing it live on the large auditorium screen was far more impressive than the YouTube viewing experience.

AE: What makes you say that?

Ze Moo: It was the thrill of being there combined with having the option to interact in real time. My aim as director of the experimental ‘live-cross-reality‘ art section of Goodbye Dollar was to try and bridge theatre and film in a way that has not done before, while at the same time exploring the boundaries of art, media and technology.

Sim performance issues

I'm relieved to announce that the performance issues on the sim seem to have been resolved. The region has been reset by Linden Lab and the FPS is stable. Thank you Khamudy Mannonen for submitting a ticket on our behalf. Smart thinking Sir!

There is something seriously wrong with the Kress region where Arthole is based.

We have no idea what is causing it and until it is identified and Linden Lab resolve the issue then the problem will persist. The sim FPS (frames per second) fluctuates wildly and can drop to as low as 1 FPS about every minute which makes even moving around almost impossible.

Apologies to anyone who has visited the gallery recently, we hope things will return to normal soon.

The launch event for Dekka Raymaker's new installation on level 3 of Arthole was a great success, and he surprised and delighted everyone with this fresh and exciting work.

From the moment you arrive in the space it's obvious the artist wants you to have a fun experience as you get to pick which Mickey Mouse hat to wear (I went for 'I ♡ Arthole'). From there a ladder leads up to another level and the actual "Church" of the title.

The Church of Whoami is something that needs to be experienced rather than described, not least because there are just so many great little details to discover that only become apparent after repeat visits. I found myself being drawn back inside several times because I felt completely immersed, I love that feeling and it's not something that happens often outside of a physical gallery situation and so very rarely in Second Life.

Dekka's space reminded me of Laurie Anderson's 1997 installation at the Royal Festival Hall; Dancing In The Moonlight With Her Wigwam Hair, which I stayed in for hours at a time because I was so comfortable in there. All the separate elements Laurie A. had put together worked so well, it was exciting and I understood it completely. Critic Robert C. Morgan described it as "humorous, charming, yet also coy, smart, and cynical", and I think this is also a perfect summary of Dekka Raymaker's work.

Arthole is excited to announce our new guest artist, Dekka Raymaker.

On Saturday, February 7, 2009, Dekka takes over from Selavy Oh with an installation entitled The Church of Whoami that will occupy Level 3 of the gallery.

Dekka has been an active participant at Brooklyn Is Watching and is a graphic designer by profession in real life.

On Sunday, January 25th at 1pm SLT, a farewell party will be held to give viewers a last chance to see Selavy's Systems of Reference. It will remain on Level 3 until January 31st, so see this amazing, complex work while you still can.

Level 3 of Arthole will re-open on February 7th, event details will be announced soon.

The original date of December 14th has been postponed for a couple of reasons. Most importantly, we want to make the event a really special experience for any members that attend and we need more time to be able to achieve that. Also, there is a bug in the current viewer and everything is taking longer to rez, which might make what we have in mind difficult to pull off and we don't want to take that risk.

The last Arthole performance; ORIENTATION, went really smoothly, there were no technical issues and everyone that attended had an equally enjoyable participation. We want to ensure THE BLACK LODGE is just as satisfying and trouble-free.

We'll announce more soon on our radio shows and here on the blog.

Susi's machinima gallery closes

Susi Spicoli has been forced to close her machinima gallery. It has always been a non-profit venture and in the end was just not financially viable for her to continue with it any longer. Susi provided plots on her land, for free, to allow many machinima makers, including myself, a space to show our work. I'm very grateful for her generosity over the last two years.

Arthole Radio is pleased to announce that the first ever voice interview with elusive Second Life artist AM Radio will broadcast as part of The Amy Freelunch Hour this Wednesday, November 26th (details below). The interview was recorded after the two met in person last week, over breakfast.

In Amy Freelunch's words:
"I was honored - and shocked, actually - that AM agreed to meet up with me and to record an interview. In person, I found him to be deeply thoughtful and articulate, more than I even expected - and I had pretty high expectations! He has much to contribute to the art community through his ideas and words, all of which makes me very excited to share this conversation with you."

Freelunch is in the process of creating an archive of recorded conversations with Second Life artists; this talk with AM Radio is the first in that series. Next week (December 3rd) her show will feature a conversation with writer Cyrus Huffhines (known in RL as Bryan Campen), who produced the virtual installation for 77 Million Paintings by Brian Eno. Huffhines speaks about a build he is currently working on, recreating his childhood home from which he and his family - including his bi-polar father - were evicted when the artist was an adolescent.

In real life, Amy Freelunch (aka Amy Wilson) is an artist and college professor of art, art history, and critical studies at the School of Visual Arts in NYC. Formally a regular contributor to Brooklyn is Watching, Freelunch joined Arthole Radio shortly after its launch in September 2008. She writes about Second Life art and culture in her blog see-through - amyfreelunch.wordpress.com.

Selavy Oh suspended from SL

Dear Selavy Oh,

This email is notification of action regarding your Second Life account, Selavy Oh, for violation of the Second Life Terms of Service or Community Standards. The violation in question occurred on October 4, 2008 in the region of Popcha.

Violation: Community Standards: Assault, Scripted Objects

Creating scripted objects which in any way singularly or persistently target another Resident in a way objectionable to the targeted Resident in a Safe Area or scripting object that prevent other Residents from entering or participating
in damage-enabled areas.

Action:
As a result of this violation, your Second Life account is being temporarily suspended for a period of 1 days. It will return to active status on Sunday, Oct 05, 2008.

To summarise; Selavy had a chain suspended between the two towers at Brooklyn is Watching, it was scripted to swing when flown into and then would eventually break and reassemble. The chain broke and fell onto someone's avatar, that person messaged Selavy, who was not online, they then filed an abuse report which resulted in the one day suspension.

According to Selavy; "the chain breaks because of flaws in Linden Lab's physics engine. the parts of the chain are scripted for self-repair. So I was banned on a private sim because I put a harmless script in a physical prim which fell on someone's avatar due to a bug in Linden's software".

Selavy has appealed the decision and is awaiting a response.

Neb's Halloween installation at Cetus

'In The Hall of the Pumpkin King'

Although Halloween is my favorite holiday, I had some difficulty with this installation for weeks. I scrapped several things I started, and ended up building pretty much everything in one day.

Though I used mostly traditional Halloween imagery (pumpkins, gravestones, etc.), the central shrine was inspired in part by the 'ofrenda,' a traditional altar constructed to honor the dead during Dias De Los Muertos (observed November 1st and 2nd). I have echoed this imagery with the sugar skulls on either side of the Pumpkin King.

The name "Pumpkin King" is not intended to refer to Jack Skellington in 'The Nightmare Before Christmas.' Rather, this Pumpkin King is the Halloween Everyman, the spirit of All Hallow's Eve that resides within all who revel in this holiday.

This installation is rather simple, and is meant to be. It is a celebration of color and light and atmosphere -- intended to be a whimsical and a little bit eerie.

On Sunday 31st August from 1.00PM SLT/PST Arthole reopens to reveal the new Season 2 work. The three levels in the gallery will feature -

LEVEL 1 WEST WING - PARANOIA, Watching the Skies for Planes - New version of Burning Life 2006 installation by Nebulosus Severine.

LEVEL 1 EAST WING - Injustice - An extended chance to see this work by Arahan Claveau, originally part of his super fun happy club and The love that dare not speak its name for KunstVlaii.

LEVEL 2 - XXX PRIVATE SHOW - Arahan Claveau & Nebulosus Severine have together created a new environment, incorporating audio and video into the experience.

LEVEL 3 - systems of reference - Selavy Oh takes over Level 3 and begins residence as the new guest artist for Season 2.

Arahan Claveau to show at the Australian Centre of Photography; Arthole Season 2

Brit Arahan Claveau will be taking part in a month-long show opening on September 5th at the Australian Centre for Photography in Paddington, Australia called Avatar. Thirty six of his photographs of avatars from Second Life® will be shown alongside images from WoW, Sims 2 and other virtual worlds. The ACP mounted the show, because "Being yourself just isn't quite enough any more." In addition, a talk will be held on September 6 to discuss the possibilities and the pitfalls of being superhuman; whether through celebrity, performance enhancing drugs or a virtual alter-ego.

Arahan said to me, "I agreed to it because the focus is not so much about the actual photography which, as you know, I quit a while back, but more about the politics of being an avatar. I think it’s a fascinating area for discussion; raises all sorts of interesting questions..."

Ichibot Nishi will no longer be collaborating with Selavy Oh as previously announced, Ichibot has decided he cannot unfortunately make the deadline of August 31st.

We're very pleased that Selavy will remain as our guest artist and her new work 'spaces' will be showing on Level 3.

- Arthole Level 2 -- CLOSING SATURDAY, AUGUST 23rd, 2008 -

Level 2 containing 'Fontana' by Arahan Claveau and 'Null' by Nebulosus Severine will close on Saturday in preparation for a new collaborative work by the artists. Levels 2 and 3 will remain inaccessible until August 31st when the gallery reopens.

Nebulosus will also remove her current installation on Level 1; 'The (Cult)ure of Television', again to reopen and be replaced by different work at the end of the month.

The exhibition runs from 5th Sept - 5th Oct 2008 at the Australian Centre For Photography in Paddington, Australia. The gallery talk "Superhuman" (detailed in the image above) is on Sept 6th.

I made this video* for Brooklyn is Watching, podcast number 21. Ichibot's "sophisticated, yet horrifying" work demanded a fresh approach. It was much more complicated to pull off than usual and is very different in style and content than my other machinima.

We will soon be changing the major exhibits at the gallery. Myself, Nebulosus and Ichibot will all be presenting new work which will be on display from August 31st. Please make a note in your diaries.

Earlier this month we hinted that Ichibot would be joined by a new guest and I can now reveal that it will be a collaboration with the awesome talent of Selavy Oh. They previously worked together at Brooklyn is Watching to much acclaim and we're excited to see what they create for Arthole.

Ichibot's current installation on level 3; λ.mnemonic, will be removed from Friday 1st August and the level closed off, so this is your last chance to see this outstanding work.

The rest of the gallery will remain accessible as normal.

Neb's sim project - update #3

The title of this installation is 'Chasm.'

I have added two major structures to the sim today. You can fly up and through them. Also, you will quickly notice that there is only one way to get from one side of the sim to the other (if you pay attention to details you will figure it out). I have also changed the terrain textures a little bit.

Turning your draw distance to maximum is advised.
(Edit - Preferences - Graphics - Check the "custom" box if it is not already - Draw Distance: 512)

If you do not have a flight assist, you will need to wear a Flight Feather to explore. There is a dispenser with a free Flight Feather at the arrival point.

I added a music stream today (SomaFM's 'Doomed'), so be sure to listen in when you're visiting the sim.

I also have a Windlight setting for optimal viewing.

My friend sp00ky has been helping me out a bit with my project and created Windlight sky & water settings that complement the setting perfectly.

Installing them might seem a bit complicated but is actually quite easy and takes only a moment or two, and I promise you the effect is worth it.

1.) Download the zip file here --

2.) Unzip the files (if you don't have Winrar, you can download that for free here -- http://www.rarlab.com) and extract them to the following locations:

Dark%20Water.xml -- C:\Program Files\SecondLife\app_settings\windlight\water
Shine%20Modified.xml -- C:\Program Files\SecondLife\app_settings\windlight\skies

[Note: if you use the Release Candidate version of SL, be sure to unzip these to the appropriate Release Candidate folders instead.]

Extracting files

3.) To see the new Windlight settings, you must restart Second Life. Then, in the 'World' menu, select 'Environment Editor.' Press the 'Advanced Sky' button and choose 'Shine Modified' from the list. Press the 'Advanced Water' menu and choose 'Dark Water.'

You can reset the skies/water at any time by choosing a different Windlight setting or by reverting to region default under 'Environment Settings.'

Update to 'Top Secret'

My original 'Top Secret' plans have been scrapped and I am starting over. However, rather than waiting to open the sim, I will now allow open access so that anyone who is curious can come check out the work as it progresses. I only have the sim for about another month so I may as well make the most of it.
